Tongaat Hulett is seeking a dedicated and experienced professional for a Mechanical Engineering Vacancy at Felixton Mill. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing Engineering Maintenance in the Extraction Department.

Minimum Requirements
- Education: BTech/BSc/BEng in Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience: At least 3 years of engineering experience, specifically in the sugar industry, managing maintenance of boilers, turbines, front end, or back end.
- Certifications: Government Certificate of Competency for Factories (GCC) will be an added advantage.
- 10-week SMRI certificate will be an added advantage
- Registration as a Professional in terms of the Engineering Professionals of South Africa Act, 114 of 1990 will be an added advantage.
Other Requirements:
- Must be willing to relocate to Empangeni/ Richards Bay area if not currently residing within the region.
- Prepared to work standby and unplanned overtime.
Skills Required:
- To be successful in this Mechanical Engineering Vacancy at Tongaat Hulett, candidates must possess a robust set of skills that ensure effective maintenance and optimisation of the plant’s operations.
- Computer Literacy: Proficiency in using various computer applications and software relevant to mechanical engineering. This includes maintenance management systems, CAD, and other engineering tools to create, modify, and analyse designs.
- Maintenance Schedules and Inspections: Strong knowledge and experience in developing and managing maintenance schedules to ensure all equipment and machinery are regularly inspected and maintained.
- Problem-solving: able to apply rigorous problem-solving methods to find root causes, explore creative options and solve difficult problems for measurable business value
- Understanding of SHE Procedures: In-depth understanding of Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) procedures to ensure compliance with industry standards.
- Budget and Cost Control: Expertise in managing budgets related to maintenance, materials, employment, and capital projects. Ability to control costs effectively while ensuring the quality and efficiency of maintenance activities.
- Knowledge of the OHS Act and Relevant Engineering Legislations: Comprehensive working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act and other relevant engineering legislations.
- Leadership and Team Management: Strong leadership skills to manage and guide the maintenance team effectively.
- Communication Skills: Effective communication skills to convey technical information clearly and concisely to team members, management, and other stakeholders.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Procurement: involvement in procurement, negotiations with outside parties, and quality control during manufacture and installation, acceptance testing and commissioning.
- Financial Management: Compile and control expenditure on maintenance, materials, employment, and capital budgets.
- Project Development: Conceptualise, develop, and deliver capital expenditure projects. Develop a capital improvement plan and manage various projects within the plant as required.
- Maintenance Planning: Develop maintenance plans for the season, off crop as well as short and long stops, to minimize LTA and maximize Overall Time Efficiency (OTE).
- Optimisation: Ensure cane throughput is maximized or optimized with the cane supply departments, ensuring minimal losses through effective maintenance and controls.
- Performance Management: Manage performance, including coaching and development of employees.
