Environmental Officer

The role of the Environmental Officer is to act as a technical expert on environmental management and to ensure effective implementation and adherence to environmental standards and guidelines applicable to the mining operation.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Implement procedural, reporting and monitoring requirements as prescribed by Environmental Legislation and applicable Regulations.
• Implement, assess and monitor performance, of the Mine’s Environmental Management System
• Implement Environmental Standard Operating Procedures.
• Implement Environmental Awareness Program.
• Routinely assess and mitigate environmental aspects and impacts.
• Maintain an up to date register of aspects, risks and mitigations including those from internal audits, incidents and external audits
• Complete environmental risk assessments and internal audits as required.
• Maintain and monitor an environmental management system
• Compile stakeholder reports on pertinent environmental monitoring data.
• Support the development and maintenance of a system of reporting for environmental incidents
• Investigate environmental incidents
• Direct and support training for mine employees and contractors on how to implement environmental requirements such as pollution control, waste reduction, best environmental management practices as well as other requirements listed in the approved Environmental Management Program (EMP), Environmental Authorisation (EA), and Integrated Water Use Licence (IWUL).
• Manage waste collection on site and maintain records of waste disposal certificates
• Maintain databases of data and compile timely reports as required for internal and external stakeholders, including senior group management and regulators (e.g. amount of Waste disposed, water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions)
• Act as the site expert advisor on environmental sampling and data collection
• Overseeing environmental management of personnel and contractors providing services to the site
• Act as a champion for environmental management and perform advisory functions to employees at an operational level.
• Ensure legal compliance of all environmental policies and provide input into policy updates and reviews

Requirements and Qualifications

• Relevant degree or diploma in Environmental Science/Mining Engineering or related professional experience
• Experience in mining or environmental management in a related field
• Knowledge of Environmental legislation in Angola
• Computer literacy: MS Office
• Good presentation and facilitation skills
• Valid driver’s license
• Pro-active thinker and have the ability to do own job planning
• Able to work without supervision
• Good communication skills and problem-solving abilities
• Proficiency in Portuguese and English advantageous
