PURPOSE:
To assist with the management and control all aspects of the vessel’s operation and
planning associated with the safe and efficient running of the vessel and crew. To
ensure that the activities onboard a fishing trawler involving that of navigational watch,
fishing, safety, quality, cost control and HR functions are adhered to.
OUTPUTS &
MEASUREMENTS:
• Understand and be familiar with handling operations of a vessel (manoeuvring,
docking, etc.) as well as the operation of critical systems (electronic navigation aids,
steering, safety apparatus, etc.).
• Support and assist the Skipper with maintenance of required logbooks according to
established practices and formats.
• Be capable of assuming full command of the vessel.
• Ensure compliance with all SAMSA, Class regulations and requirements, Maritime
OSH requirements.
• Ensure compliance with company watch keeping procedures and completion of
logbooks.
• Ensure legislative requirements pertaining to customs and immigration regulations,
port regulations, MCM regulations and NRCS regulations.
• Maintain housekeeping on vessels and ensure that hygiene requirements are
strictly adhered to according to quality standards.
• Ensure care and maintenance of fishing gear and associated equipment.
• Ensure that accurate ETA & fishing tallies are communicated.
• Optimize and maintain budgetary constraints within the allocated vessel.
• Ensure that discipline is maintained at all times.
• Maintain all electronic aids onboard as defined by certain SOP’s and in accordance
with the manufacturer’s requirements.
• Ensure that all officers and managers onboard train and mentor the transfer of skills
to the further development of all onboard the vessel.
REQUIREMENTS AND
COMPETENCIES:
• Qualified Grade 3 Fisherman (Mate).
• Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in the maritime industry with progressive
responsibilities in a similar role.
• Exceptional management skills – direct and supervise all crew members and ensure
that each member understand and performs his/her designated duties adequately.
• Ability to function independently as also effectively in a team within a high-pressure
environment.
• Strong computer literacy skills.
• Excellent communication and writing skills.
• Willingness to work long hours continuously.
• Ability to uphold and adhere to maritime regulations and company policies and
procedures.
