CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The main purpose of the job is to assist technicians and lecturers by providing for laboratory operational requirements, namely, preparing for undergraduate practicals and providing support for research laboratories.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Assist with preparation work for undergraduate practical sessions and support for research laboratories.   
  • Assist with maintaining apparatus and glassware in laboratories.  
  • Remove waste from laboratories to safe storage before removal.  
  • Maintain liquid nitrogen and CO2 levels for cell storage and growth.
  • Collect chemicals/orders from stores using correct protocols.
  • Maintain a clean and safe laboratory working environment. 
  • Assist with general administrative duties.    
  • Maintain inventory list of chemicals, consumables and equipment.

CORE COMPETENCIES

 
  • Knowledge of chemicals and laboratory equipment, and the correct usage thereof.
  • Ability to set up laboratory apparatus and equipment.
  • Ability to work with lecturers, technicians, researchers and undergraduate/postgraduate students. 
  • Computer literacy and good administrative skills.   
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.   
  • Knowledge of OHSA regulations.    
 

REQUIREMENTS

 
  • A minimum of a Grade 12 Education.
  • At least 2 years experience working in a laboratory environment.
