JOB DESCRIPTION:

CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

  • Assisting with the coordination of all operational activities relating to the marine engineering programme
  • To facilitate, lecture and administer the learning process for students in modules presented by the university at undergraduate and post graduate level in Marine Engineering, to do research, contribute to community engagement and to be involved in the core functions of the University.
  • To contribute to development of the curriculum for the Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Marine Engineering) in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering and related subjects. This will include conducting research into the latest Maritime technologies and how they need to be integrated into the curriculum.
  • Assist in the accreditation of the BEngTech with SAMSA/ECSA and other necessary organizations

 

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

The key performance areas for this post are:

  • Prepare and develop course material.
  • Prepare and deliver lectures and tutorials at senior and junior programme levels.
  • Assist with marketing, recruitment, registration and timetabling.
  • Prepare and mark assessments, submit to moderation & assist with Invigilation.
  • Conduct research.
  • Develop non-subsidised short course material and facilitate short courses and any other operational requirements relating to the programme of not only marine engineering but all programmes within the Department of Maritime Engineering and the Marine Straining Centre.
  • Departmental strategic planning.

CORE COMPETENCIES

Core competencies for this post of Lecturer/senior lecturer include:

  • Knowledge in the theory and application in the Marine environment
  • Experience in facilitating learning at undergraduate and post graduate level.
  • Contribution to or the potential to contribute to the creation of knowledge by virtue of published research and of successfully supervising master’s and doctoral candidates, involvement in relevant engagement/consulting activities and the publication of textbooks, etc.
  • Knowledge of applications in Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture.
  • Automation and Control knowledge.
  • Marine Simulation software knowledge and instruction

REQUIREMENTS

  • A minimum of Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Marine Engineering (3 year, 420 credit) AND a 4th year (140 credit) honours in Marine Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with Marine speciality, AND registration with a relevant internationally recognized professional body (as a candidate or higher). Candidates with Honours should have 3 years relevant and / or related working experience.
  • In the process of completing or registered for a Masters degree in Engineering with Marine speciality. Candidates who have graduated with a relevant Masters are required to have 2 years’ relevant and / or related working experience.
  • Professional work experience in a ship building and naval architecture environment is advantageous.
  • Shipboard experience at management level is advantageous.
  • Teaching experience at the higher education level is advantageous.
  • Computer literate.
  • Candidates must be fluent in English
