The University of Fort Hare (UFH) is envisioned as a distinctive African university, advancing excellence and innovation in research, teaching, learning, administration, and social engagement. In this context, UFH Libraries has established a Digital Library Services (DLS) Unit and seeks to recruit a Manager: DLS who will support learning, teaching, and research within the digital scholarship realm. 
 

The main purpose of this position is to enable online access to the digital scholarship of the university. The incumbent will be managing the identification, planning, and implementation of digital curation projects, and a comprehensive digital scholarship programme, as well as systems and technologies that meet the needs of a growing campus and the evolving environment of scholarly communication. Included are responsibilities for the overall efficacy, ethical practice, and legal compliance within the DLS Unit. S/he will manage, coordinate, evaluate, and optimise digitisation procedures and digital assets in line with international standards and established procedures for a university renewing itself and claiming its rightful identity as a unique, smart rural African university.
 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The key responsibilities include:
  • Coordinating the development, implementation, maintenance, and preservation of the library’s digital collections (including rare digitised materials and special collections, image resources, and born-digital content), and the university’s scholarly outputs (journal articles, conference proceedings, OERs, book and book chapters, and creative works).
  • Putting up and maintaining systems for UFH Libraries to deliver quality digital curation for a wide variety of materials to enable and support preservation and access to a digital collection using current digital library trends, tools, and standards.
  • Developing and implementing guidelines, procedures, and workflows for managing digital conversion processes to create digital library resources and institutional assets that adhere to digital formats that can be sustained for long-term preservation within a cyber secure digital library setup.
  • Identifying fit for purpose digital library platforms and interfaces to provide accessible and discoverable digital collections, research data, and other digital assets hosted on the digital library set up with clearly defined protocols and procedures to ascertain that funder mandates and legal and ethical obligations are met.
  • Working with ICT to implement a system of information architecture and metadata for managing large amounts of data intrinsic to digital curation, digital collections’ accessibility, and optimal discoverability for an enhanced user experience.
  • Implementing FAIR compliant metadata schemas for digital library projects; quality assurance procedures for a wide variety of subject areas; file naming conventions.
  • Providing project management for ongoing digital systems and services, including materials assessment, digital imaging and ensuring that digitisation projects proceed according to their respective schedules, budgets, and procedures.
  • Ensuring sustainable practices and quality services within DLS Unit through good governance, ethical leadership, and appropriate management of resources.
  • Advocating and collaborating with constituencies on issues related to digital scholarship, scholarly communication, and digital preservation both directly and through the assistance of faculty librarians.
  • Keeping abreast of the latest trends and best practices in the field of digital scholarship services including scholarly communication.
 
Minimum requirements:
  • Postgraduate degree/Honours in Library and Information Science or an equivalent qualification in related disciplines
  • Master’s degree will be an added advantage.
  • 5+ years work experience in digitisation, academic ICT sector, or digital library environment
  • Knowledge of academic libraries’ operations, systems, and technologies.
  • Knowledge of the scholarly research processes and publishing relating to versions of records and the registration processes of datasets and outputs (e.g. DOIs) including FAIR, CARE and TRUST principles, Copyright legislation and Creative Commons.
