JOB DESCRIPTION:

CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

To facilitate teaching and learning in Zoology at undergraduate and postgraduate level, to contribute to the administration of the department as needed, and to undertake research and supervise and promote postgraduate research in Zoology, particularly on terrestrial animals.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate students in Zoology in the fields of animal diversity, terrestrial animal behavior, terrestrial animal ecology and conservation biology
  • Develop course material for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching modules
  • Perform teaching-related and departmental administrative duties
  • Attract external funding and provide research supervision to postgraduate students
  • Conduct research and publish results in peer-reviewed scientific journals focused on terrestrial animals
  • Interact with relevant industry groups, government departments and independent research institutes to further the goals of the Department and of the University
  • Participate in community engagement related to animal science awareness and other service activities
  • Provide academic leadership at appropriate levels within the teaching, learning and research arenas

CORE COMPETENCIES

 
  • Demonstrated abilities to teach undergraduate students and supervise postgraduate students
  • Proven research and publication record, including expertise in animal evolutionary biology, terrestrial ecology, conservation biology, biostatistics
  • NRF-rated researcher or ability to be rated within 5 years.
  • A proven record of attracting external funding for research from national and international sources.
  • Record of participating and or leading in a research team or project
  • Ability to work with and contribute to a team effort.
  • Proven record or potential for providing academic leadership.
  • Proven track record of dissemination of science including conferences and outreach engagement.
 

REQUIREMENTS

 
  1. Qualifications: Minimum of a Ph.D. relevant to the field of Zoology.
  2. Teaching: Minimum of 1-5 years of university level learning and teaching experience (including lecturing and course assessment) at undergraduate level in the field of Zoology with postgraduate teaching experience advantageous.
  3. Postgraduate supervision: Preference will be given to candidates with a proven track record of student supervision in the field of Zoology
  4. Publication: Preference will be given to candidates with a proven track record of research publications in the field of Zoology in DHET accredited, ISI-rated journals
