Primary Responsibilities

Perform routine analytical techniques related to the established Fire Assay, Wetchem, ICP-OES procedures. Assist in the planning and co-ordination of Fire Assay, Wetchem, ICP-OES processes. Evaluate and report analytical results

Specific Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, validate and report analytical results.
  • Evaluate and ensure technical accuracy of analytical results reported.
  • Monitor analytical processes and take remedial action where deviations/discrepancies arise impacting on the quality of analytical results.
  • Consult with HOD to address retests, result anomalies or other problems with samples or analyses.
  • Assist with maintaining up to date records of relevant documentation required for accreditation in consultation with the HOD.
  • Keep abreast with the new trends and current developments within the analytical science.
  • Follow HOD clear detailed instructions and demonstrate flexibility in executing your duties.
  • Keep the detailed records of all experimental/investigative work undertaken and submit the required technical report.
  • Ensure effective and optimal utilization of staff, equipment and facilities within the department.
  • Drive good housekeeping practices within the department to ensure that the work areas and surrounding environment is kept clean at all times.
  • Comply and conform to the QHSE policy of the company and ensure staff follow all safety procedures.
  • Must have full understanding of the LIMS system.
  • Must comply and conform to the Quality Management System (ISO17025 and SANAS).
  • Ensure proper and correct profiling of QA/QC reports for various clients in keeping to agreed work schedules.
  • Ensure Wet Chem and Instrumentation process (Prill picking, digestion of prills and reading samples on ICP-OES is followed exactly as to the relevant Competence Modules set.
  • Liaise with the Supervisors/HOD/Production manager to ensure customer requirements are achieved with regard to the turnaround time commitments.
  • Ensure daily Communication between ICP and Fire assay (HOD & Senior Staff) for the reading of jobs from FAS in order to satisfy scheduling and achieve turnaround and production requirements.
  • Institute the necessary company corrective measures against subordinates for actions that are contrary to company rules & procedures.
  • Must be willing to work overtime/flexible hours when necessary.
  • Assist in the management of special projects as allocated from start to completion reporting progress to Instrumentation HOD.
  • Provide daily production reports and records regarding the number of assays & re-assays done, reported and outstanding samples in the system.
  • Assist with the training of new Laboratory employees on the application of the Wet chemical and instrumentational techniques and processes.
  • Assist in the Wet Chemistry and instrumentation production plan.
  • Plan, monitor and assist with ordering of consumable items to ensure that correct stock levels are maintained at all times.
  • Assist in the method development and method validation.
  • Assist in improving the wet chemistry and Instrumentation process and problem solving.
  • Assist in the investigation and resolution of any irregularities/non-conformances within the wet chemistry and Instrumentation process and register them as Improvement Requests and/or Client's Complaints.
  • Standing in for HOD during their absence due to meetings, trainings, sick leave & annual leave.
  • Identify and report quality issues and implement the corrective and preventative action
  • Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
  • Perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by direct line manager.

Specific Requirements

  • Cease the use of any equipment that may be deemed to constitute a safety hazard or enter hazardous environments without the necessary knowledge and protection and report the situation to higher authority to take action.
  • Cease to carry on with work that may affect the quality (integrity) of services and report the situation to higher authority to take action.
  • Initiate a formal improvement request when a deviation of the system occurs, possible improvements are identified or when nonconformity is identified.
  • Assist with consumables and inventory control and ordering within budgetary constraints.
  • Discuss and assist the HOD with the evaluation of deviations to process, protocols and methods.
  • Drive production plans.
  • Assist with addressing client complaints.
  • Validate, approve and authorize analytical results.
  • Authorise re-assays of nonconforming results.
  • Assist with the Authorizing and competency sign-off of staff.
  • Assist HOD to authorise and validate new analytical methods and calibration standards for use.
  • Assist with the management of overtime
